Teaching
The community where I work and the professional associations that I participate in are reflective of my commitment to provide quality teaching as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Educator. The teaching in this role takes many forms. From a clinical standpoint, the teaching involves the education of patient an family regarding issues of health promotion, prevention, on-going treatments, medications - all aspects of primary care. From a nurse educator standpoint, teaching refers to quality delivery of nursing curricula to nursing students. Further, I am involved with mentor-ship programs affiliated with Arizona State University's Nursing program, and with the Arizona Action Coalition, an extension of the Arizona Nurses Association.
My formal teaching experience is recent and is the result of the Nurse Educator coursework completed with Old Dominion University. It is a complete curriculum, involving: Curriculum development and appraisal, lesson planning and design, lesson delivery, grading - the entire experience of a nurse educator in a community college setting.
The mentor-ship programs I am involved with are also important aspects of teaching. With Arizona State University, I am closely involved with the development of hands-on, practical, and critical thinking skills of a nursing student in a work setting. It is a five week program for each student as they work through their community health rotation with me. With the Arizona Action Coalition, I am part of a group of mentors who are bringing 'the bigger picture' to associates degree nursing students. It is a pilot program funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Reflective Statement: These teaching experiences and ongoing activities represent achievement and development of the CNS core competency of teaching.
