Research
A project involving development of a Health Literacy program for a small community hospital exemplifies the curriculum of Old Dominion University and its focus toward developing research skills for evidence-based practice. The health literacy program was an exercise in applied research toward resolving high readmission rates among elderly patients.
Background research was conducted on the nature and history of health literacy, including literature review, sourcing of data, demographics, and analysis of past research.
The project involved use of research data and existing materials to develop a program for improving health literacy among a specific patient population. The end product was a fully integrated model using tools from the Agency for Health and Research Quality (AHRQ), and tools endorsed by AHRQ and other HHS agencies to both teach provider staff and patient effective communication strategies, resulting in improved health literacy.
